This began as a hollow form which met an unfortunate fate, shattering into pieces as it bounced off the wall behind the lathe. I set it aside for a year or so, not sure if it could be fixed but not wanting to dump it.

Then, while experimenting with turning square platters, I had a fortuitous insight when I set a piece down by the shattered hollow form. The form seemed like an egg after a chick had hatched, with its broken pieces. So I glued it together again.

I carved the square platter into four leaves that would fit around the form, and glued the form into place, finishing all with drying oil and wax. It sold right away.
